It is Tuesday! If you are in the mood to get a little tipsy this weeks Cocktail Corner is just for you. The South Shore Kitchen went looking to our lovely neighbors to the south for some inspiration and have made an Oaxaca Old Fashioned. The smoky citrus flavor is a well-balanced revelation.
It Goes Like This
Overall a quick and easy recipe, the most complicated part for us was the pronunciation. A quick google search set us straight and we are kicked back sipping a Oaxaca (Wah-ha-kah) Old Fashioned like a pro. One of our favorite things about this recipe is that you get a lot of wow, for extraordinarily little effort. It feels fancy, like you should be sitting in a smokey jazz club, the lights go down and Miles Davis begins performing. Ok, that might be a little extreme, but it has a sophisticated vibe.
All you need to do is add the liquids to your shaker give it a stir, pour over ice, and then play with a little fire! Take your orange peel with pith, give it a little squeeze to spritz out the orange oil near a flame until it sparks a little and drop it into your drink. The singed orange oils smell fantastic, it’s kind of fun to play with fire and it makes your drink really tasty.
A standard South Shore Kitchen caution statement…. playing with fire isn’t a good idea, consuming alcohol and playing with fire isn’t a great idea. Please use common sense when having open flames near flammables.
Each week we gather our team and rate the drinks featured on Cocktail Corner. This week is no different. We are giving the Oaxaca Old Fashioned a solid 4 out of 5 across the board. It is a great drink with a surprisingly complex flavor. With that said, it is probably not a crowd. A few of our tasters felt it was not for them but said they could see how people would like it.
We also feel this is a drink that makes it worth splurging for a top shelf tequila. You are getting out what you are putting in with the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. Go for the best your budget allows it makes a much better drink.
Beyond the great taste, we like this cocktail for the experience it feels fancy. A great cocktail to sip on and have a chat. In our opinion you are not going to be knocking these back like Kool-Aid, but what do we know?
